Exploring the future of luxury assets: insights from Bruce Maltwood

Bruce Maltwood, a director in our yacht services division, works closely with owners, captains, lawyers, family offices, trust companies and yacht brokers. He advises on the most appropriate ownership structures based on the type and intended use of the yacht. Bruce shares his view on the trends shaping the superyacht sector in this insight piece.

What are the key trends shaping luxury assets like superyachts?

The field of luxury assets is undergoing the same transformation we are seeing across all sectors, with dramatic advancements in technology, significant world events and the fundamental shift in values and priorities between generations.

Younger yacht owners are moving beyond traditional cruising routes like the ‘Milk Run’ between Monaco and St Tropez, opting for experiences that reflect a greater sense of adventure and exploration. This change is fuelling a rise in demand for explorer yachts capable of travelling further afield.

The impact of the pandemic continues to be felt. Owners are increasingly viewing their yachts not simply as vessels, but as platforms for reconnecting with family and friends, escaping city life, and embracing nature. They have become floating sanctuaries and spaces for meaningful and memorable experiences.

New cruising destinations are also reshaping the market. The Gulf states and the Red Sea are investing significantly in state-of-the-art infrastructure, offering cultural depth and adventure-led experiences tailored to the superyacht sector.

Modern superyachts now come equipped with a growing range of toys and technology, from submarines and drones to cutting-edge watersports gear. While these additions enhance the experience, they also introduce new risks. For example, lithium battery management is now a critical consideration for onboard safety compliance, alongside tailored insurance for passengers and crew engaged in these activities.

How might the landscape for luxury assets change in the next 12 months?

As in other areas of private wealth, the superyacht industry is on the cusp of significant change driven by technological innovation, evolving ownership demographics and regulatory advancements. While these developments can create challenges, they are also raising standards in operational safety and environmental practices. Shipyards are increasingly prioritising sustainability, with ongoing innovations aimed at reducing the sector’s carbon footprint through improved fuel efficiency and adopting biofuels.

AI is rapidly becoming a crucial tool in yacht ownership and operations, with owners and managers using it to analyse costs, predict maintenance needs and optimise vessel performance. This technology offers powerful insights, which must be balanced with expert advice to navigate complex regulatory frameworks and ensure the best outcomes aligned with the owner’s requirements.

The demand for berthing and skilled crew continues to grow as the global population of ultra-high-net-worth individuals expands. Although only a small proportion of this community currently owns yachts, steady growth in this demographic is driving the market forward. This presents opportunities for new marina developments and innovative crew training solutions to meet the rising demand.

What excites people about luxury assets?

The luxury asset space is evolving quickly, reflecting a broader shift in values. One of the most exciting aspects is how technology is redefining what’s possible - from cutting-edge propulsion systems to AI-driven management tools, innovation is enabling more efficient, sustainable and user-friendly ownership experiences.

Additionally, there is a growing focus on environmental responsibility, and owners are increasingly seeking solutions that align with their ESG values, such as hybrid propulsion, advanced waste management systems, and sustainable materials in yacht construction.

New destinations are opening up, too. Remote regions such as Antarctica, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean are becoming more accessible, offering extraordinary cruising experiences and the chance to explore truly unspoiled environments.

Lastly, the personalisation of luxury assets continues to gain traction. Owners are collaborating closely with designers and shipyards to create something unique - bespoke yachts that reflect their personality, values and ambitions. This combination of creativity, exploration and innovation makes this an exciting moment for the sector.
