Praxis partners with Guernsey Dairy on “Milk for Schools” initiative

Guernsey Dairy has launched its Milk for Schools initiative, a community health programme that is providing a daily serving of fresh Guernsey milk to children in primary schools, preschools and day nurseries.

The scheme, supported by States of Guernsey Education and the island’s Clinical Lead Dietician, aims to ensure that children attending primary school breakfast clubs and early years care receive a nutritious start their day. The initiative is being funded through sponsorship from local businesses, and has already received backing from three local firms including Praxis, which is providing milk for children at Vauvert Primary School.

According to the NHS health guidelines, milk is a powerhouse of essential nutrients that help children thrive.  Just one cup of milk every day helps to contribute to a child’s daily protein requirements, fuelling growth and energy to help them concentrate, learn, and perform at their best.

Before its launch, the Milk for Schools programme was piloted at Amherst's breakfast club and two pre-schools, with the feedback from children, parents, and staff overwhelmingly positive.

Staff at the pilot schools highlighted that while many parents were supportive, not all realised how important milk is in children’s daily nutrition and development, underlining the value of the project.

Charlotte Barnes, Group Head of Marketing and Communications, said: “We are very excited to be working with the Dairy to help ensure more of our youngsters have access to a glass of milk each day. This project not only supports the health and wellbeing of young islanders, but also reinforces our commitment to the community. We really hope other businesses will join us in ensuring children across Guernsey start their day with the nutrition they need to learn and thrive.”

Guernsey Dairy sought expert advice and guidance from Myfanwy Datta, Clinical Lead Dietitian, Nutrition and Dietetics for States of Guernsey and Kim Hutchison, Head of Primary Leadership and Development and Kate Hynes from States of Guernsey Early Years Team.

Mrs Hutchison said: “All States primary schools now run breakfast clubs.  They play a crucial role in preparing children for a successful day of learning. The Milk for Schools initiative enhances these clubs by adding a nutritious element, helping children feel ready, energised, and focused in the classroom.”

Andrew Tabel, Operations Director at Guernsey Dairy said that the project team has contacted over 80 local businesses and hopes that those considering supporting a school or early years setting will see the direct benefit the Milk for Schools initiative can offer. “By sponsoring a setting, companies can make a direct and visible difference to the health of the island’s children, while also teaching them the importance of Guernsey’s dairy farming sector and its contribution in supporting the island’s natural habitat and biodiversity,” said Mr Tabel.
